All Star Success Story – Terry “Bear” L.

“Every time I walked through the door, I had a job.” That is what Terry “Bear” L. said when I spoke to him yesterday. Terry is a long time All Star employee in Bend, OR. Terry has been working with All Star to successfully find employment since the office was first opened. When Terry first moved to Bend he was referred to All Star and met Scott Reynolds, the Bend Branch Manager. Terry has developed a friendship with everyone in the Bend office over the years. “Always dealing with the guys in the office, you end up with a bunch of friends rather than managers,” said Terry. “I often run into them outside of work and they are just great people.”

Terry has held all kinds of positions with All Star Labor & Staffing over the years. He has worked mostly in the construction industry, some seasonal, some temp jobs and quite a few that turned into full time positions that would last years. Seasonal jobs have included working at Mt. Bachelor, and events at the fairgrounds. Some of his favorite jobs over the years have included demolition, framing and drilling. He has a real talent for working with his hands and has learned some amazing skills from different kinds of temp work over the years. He learned how to build water features, conveyer systems, corrals and out buildings. He loved building fences on the edge of the national forest area and discovered he has a knack for bringing in business for the contractors he has worked for. Over the years he has been given great bonuses and even nicer work trucks for the hard work he has put into every job he does.

The last temp job that Terry was sent to has now turned into a full time job that he has been at for years. He hand crafts wood paddles for a local company. He loves working with his hands to create and sculpt, loves going to work every day and especially loves not having to work outside in extreme weather. The company even worked with All Star to bring on Terry’s stepson for seasonal work. He has been the jack of all trades and learned so much over the years but he now feels like he has found what we like to call – his forever home. The job that turns out to be the right fit in a way that you didn’t even know was possible.

“We could not be happier for Terry,” said Scott Reynolds. “It has been our pleasure to help him find good jobs over the years and we love getting to know people so well that placing them in the right job is easy for us. We will be here if Terry ever needs us again, but I think he has found the right forever job for him. Finding a job is hard when you go it alone. You never know what you are going to get but when you work with All Star we get to place you with clients we know, job descriptions that are very clear and by getting to know our employees we have a much better sense of what works best for everyone. 7 Habits of A Powerful Leader

In times of uncertainty, we look to our leaders to guide us. In order to be a true and powerful leader you must stick to your principles. If you heard someone described as a powerful leader, you might assume he or she would be the loudest person in the room, the one telling everyone else what to do. But powerful does not mean dominating. In fact, a controlling, dominating person is the very opposite of a powerful leader. So what exactly makes a powerful leader and how do you become one? Here are the 7 essential habits of a powerful leader:

1. Do not control others
Powerful leaders do not try to control, convince, or manipulate other people or their behaviors. They know it doesn’t work, and it’s not their job. Their job is to control themselves.

2. Create a respectful environment
Powerful leaders are able to consciously and deliberately create the environment by showing respect. They deliberately set the standard for how they expect to be treated by the way they treat others. As they consistently act in responsible, respectful, and loving ways, it becomes clear that only people who can get close to them are those who know how to show respect, be responsible, and love well.

3. Refuse to be a victim
Life does not happen to powerful leaders, powerful leaders make choices and decision to navigate proactively. They are not controlled or infected by their environment. Powerful leaders refuse the play the victim by shifting responsibility for their choices onto others.

4. Require others around you to be powerful
When powerful leaders encounter a powerless person, they are not tempted to dive into any unhealthy emotional ties or attachments. They hear a victim’s sob story and ask, “so what are you going to do about that? What have you tried? What else could you try?” These questions confront powerless people with their responsibility and their capacity to make choices and control themselves. This is the only option a powerful leader will offer to powerless people: become powerful, make choices, and control yourself.

5. Make daily decisions that align with your vision
Powerful leaders do not simply react to whatever is happening today. They are able to take responsibility for their decisions and the consequences of those decisions – even for mistakes and failures. They can respond to today and create tomorrow. Powerful leaders have a vision and mission for their life, and can use the events of each day, whether positive or negative, to direct themselves toward that vision.

6. Let your “yes” be “yes” and “no” be “no”
Popular opinion or the pressure of others does not sway the language of powerful leaders. They know exactly what they want and how to communicate their desires. A powerful leader says, “I will. I do. I am.” Powerful leaders can say both “yes” and “no,” and mean it. Others can try to manipulate, charm and threaten, but their answer will stand.

7. Consistently demonstrate who you say you are
Powerful leaders can be who they say they are on a consistent basis. And because they know how to be themselves, they invite those around them to be themselves. Only powerful leaders can create a safe place to know and be known intimately. They say, “I can be me around you and you can be you around me. We do not need to control each other, and we don’t want to control each other. “

We all have room to grow in becoming powerful leaders. No matter what, know that every step on the journey to getting free and being a powerful leader in your own life is worth it. Choosing to say “yes!” to a life of responsibility will be one filled with adventure and joy. Do not let powerlessness and a victim mentality steal from you any longer. YOU can be powerful leader who can make powerful decisions implementing these 7 traits.

Lane County April jobless rate of 4 percent stayed near record low

Lane County’s unemployment rate has been holding near the record low set in February, according to the latest state Employment Department report released Tuesday.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4 percent in April, virtually unchanged from March, the report said.

While the jobless rate has stayed low, over-the-year job growth in Lane County has started to slow, said Brian Rooney, a labor economist with the department.

“It had been at about 2.5 percent,” he said. In April, “it was 1.7 percent.”

“When you have rapid employment growth it’s hard to maintain that percentage increase” over an extended period, Rooney said.

He said nothing negative on the horizon would suggest a sustained downturn in job growth.

Total nonfarm employment, not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, rose by 1,100 jobs in April. It was up 2,700 from April 2016 for over-the-year job growth of 1.7 percent. That compares with the overall state growth rate of 2.1 percent in April.

Total nonfarm payroll employment in Lane County was 159,500 in April, up from 158,400 in March.

Lane County showed regular seasonal gains in April.

With summer coming and a stronger economy, she anticipates filling many positions for laborers in such industries as construction, landscaping and manufacturing.

Mathany also thinks hospitality in Eugene will be a hot industry for her company.

“In our Portland branch, we find a lot of servers, cooks and baristas,” she said. “We feel in Eugene there’s a lot of great restaurants and caterers and wedding (venues) that we’ll have a good-size hospitality (clientele.)”

In Lane County in April, leisure and hospitality gained 300 jobs, for a total of 17,100.

Retail trade added 200 jobs, for a total of 20,300. Education and health services gained 200, for a total of 25,800. Professional and business services, which includes temporary staffing, added 200, for a total of 17,900. Construction gained 100 for a total of 6,600.

Government lost 400 jobs in April, the report said. A loss of 500 in local government education, which includes the University of Oregon, was countered by a 100 gain in noneducation local government.

All Star Success Story – Armando G.

Armando G. is most certainly an All Star! He came to All Star after Trevor, a Staffing Coordinator at our Salem office met Armando in early November at a non-work related event. After hearing some of Armando’s story, Trevor gave him a business card and invited him to come in and apply for work. Armando came in a couple days later to apply and was immediately sent out on a part-time construction job and totally nailed it, pun intended. Shortly after that, another construction company needed help and Armando was available and sent right out. That client kept Armando working for several months and said he was a great employee, a very hard worker. In total over the course of 5 months, we sent Armando to a total of 4 different clients who needed part-time help and every one of them raved about what a great employee he was. One of the clients said: “ARMANDO KICKS BUTT, SMART, GREAT ATTITUDE”. His fantastic attitude was rewarded in January with an All Star Employee of The Month Award.

Social Media – What Not to Do If You Want a Job

We all do it, share our lives on social media but you may not be aware that it could cost you a job. These days hiring professionals see you well before they meet you. One in five employers says they have rejected a candidate after seeing something they deem as inappropriate online. So, what are the red flags employers look for in your social media?

According to YouGov.com, three quarters of employers agree that aggressive or offensive language is the most off-putting social media behavior.

So, what can you do to improve your social habits for the sake of your job or future career? The following tips will help:
1. Get Linked In! Make sure your LinkedIn profile is at all star status! The more you add, the better chances you will have. Add professional pictures and links to any portfolios of work you may have. 48% of 2,000 business manages reported LinkedIn as there go-to social media platform to check on potential employees. Facebook came in as a close second at 46%.
2. You are your own brand. You may not realize it, but what you post across social media paints a picture of who you are and what you stand for. Be cognizant of that every time you post.
3. Avoid the provocative. Images speak for themselves and if you have pictures of yourself doing things up in “da club”, you may want to keep those on your private phone or privately secured pages. It’s not great that people judge, but businesses need to thoroughly vet candidates so they are confident they are making a good investment for their company.
4. Slow your roll with the Selfies! Selfies are great but there is a line that many cross when posting too many and they end up looking very self-involved. Remember, you are your own brand and is being self-involved the message you want to portray about yourself? If you love the selfie, no worries, just stick to Snapchatting your friends with them!
5. Don’t badmouth. Social media can turn into a very hostile place. Just remember to keep your anger in check and most importantly – don’t badmouth your current or previous employer. This creates a negative image of you and your future employer will assume that you will do the same thing to them.

All Star Success Story – Ed

Ed, a retired Air Force veteran has worked with All Star Labor & Staffing in Bend, on and off since 2004. Ed’s relationship and work history with All Star speaks volumes to how the Bend branch maintains and supports relationships with employees while they are trying to find their forever job or as we call it, their “home”. Ed has been a temporary worker, hired on full-time with the company 3 times! His journey started with temporary assignments including day labor, painting crews and major events at the fairgrounds. The first one that led to a full-time job was working at a local college doing custodial and ground maintenance. After a couple years, Ed ended up deciding to go back to school to pursue a different occupation but he ended up not enjoying that chosen career path.

That had Ed heading back to All Star for another assignment. His second full time gig grew out of a temporary assignment working for a local newspaper where he worked successfully for 5 years. Ed, wanting to get out of an office and have a bit more independence went back one more time to All Star looking for something that might fulfill his needs. He ended up back at the fairgrounds where he had done temporary assignments years earlier. When a county job opened up doing building and ground maintenance for the fairgrounds, Ed got the job!

“Working with All Star has kept me working for the best part of 10 years! Now I am in a job that I actually look forward to going to every morning,” said Ed. “Each day brings a new challenge and I could not be happier. It is hard work but I am happy and I have fun doing it. The benefits and wage don’t hurt either! All Star has been really supportive, always have been. Scott is always so personable, even when I see him around town he stops to check in with me and we chat about how things are going.”

All Star Success Story – Omar

Omar came to All Star Labor & Staffing – Portland in hopes of finding a more professional environment. He was working as a freight stocker at a big box appliance store and while it was a great job, he was looking to move up in the professional world. When he came to All Star he was instantly liked by supervisor Adam Stephens. “We knew Omar would be a great fit after just one meeting. We originally hired him to be an Staffing Coordinator here at All Star but he is such a great people person that he ended up doing a lot of administrative duties for the front desk, interacting with people on a regular basis,” said Stephens.

Before Adam had hired him internally, he was sent on one interview for an Administrative Assistant position at a large construction company. He was originally the runner up and did not get the position but when the person hired did not work out, Adam received a phone call right away because the hiring manager had regretted not hiring Omar to begin with.

While everyone at All Star was sad to see him go, we knew that Omar had dreams that surpassed our office. He is now working at the construction company as an Administrative Assistant and attending school at PCC working towards his associates degree in business management and IT.

“I want to thank All Star for all of the support I felt from the moment I walked through their door. I was presented with such great opportunities,” said Omar.

We know that Omar will go on to have a very bright future, we thank him for letting us be a part of his journey and we wish him well!
