Be The First Rate Version of Yourself

“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else”. This quote by the amazing Judy Garland resonates on a personal and professional level with everyone. For Judy Garland this meant that no matter the ups and downs in her life, at least she was her authentic self. This quote has been used time and time again for good reason as nothing good can come from pretending to be something that you’re not. “Be yourself.” It’s a vague adage, so what does it really mean, to be yourself? And is it really as easy as it sounds? With the steps below, it can be.

Don’t get stuck in the past.
Let yourself grow without reminding yourself of past mistakes. You are not a victim of your circumstances, you don’t need to cling to past mistakes. You should absolutely own them, but then allow yourself to forgive and move forward.

Find how you define yourself on your own terms.
Oscar Wilde once said: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. It’s a humorous quote but speaks of the truth. You can’t be yourself if you don’t know, understand, and accept yourself first. Take the time to see yourself for who you are, not what everyone expects you to be. This is not easy and you may be self-conscious but when you surround yourself with people who are of like minds and who are also true to themselves, you will be accepted for who you are.

Find your talents and your career path.
When it comes to finding your career path there are ways to find out what you are naturally drawn to. Everyone was born with talent, you just need to explore them. There are many personality tests that will help you see what sort of work you may be suited for. Just remember to take this with a grain of salt – no test can define you. Only you can do that.

Don’t put yourself in a box.
You are not just one thing with defined edges. You can be brought up with certain values that will make an undeniable impression on you such as your religion, culture, mentors, education and friends. As you figure out who your authentic self is, you can weigh these values and decide what belongs to you, what you want to own as your truth and what you feel in conflict with. It is okay to feel conflicted, it is all a part of you. You have wonderful dynamic edges that can contain all different aspects of your beliefs and feelings. Just value what feels the most true to you and just keep doing the next right thing for you.

You are stronger than you know.
If you are not focusing on who you are and you are constantly comparing yourself to someone else, than you likely are holding on to resentment. If you want to be like someone else, then you will constantly disappoint yourself and hold unhealthy resentment that will only lead you to self-destruction. Start looking within for your strengths and good character. If you can accept yourself, than you can start to learn and grow into the person you were meant to be. You are meant to be YOU, the first rate version!

1. Get your foot in the door
A couple of things may be getting in the way of your dream full-time job. 1. You might be interested in working for a company that isn’t advertising full-time positions. 2. You want to break into a field, but don’t have a lot of experience. Either way, temp assignments would be a fantastic way to achieve both these goals. Not only are companies more likely to hire candidates without a lot of experience on a temporary basis, but you can also get your foot in the door at your dream company.

2. Flexible schedule
When you work as a temporary employee, you can have more say in what your schedule will be. While you can absolutely work full-time, you can also work just a few days a week or a few hours, every day. You simply need to have clear communication regarding your scheduling needs when working with your staffing coordinator.

3. Free training
There are so many job possibilities out there but some extra training might be needed. When you partner with a trustworthy staffing agency for your temporary assignments, you can easily access new resources, including free training. As a result, you can develop new skills and improve existing ones, helping you get into a new field that can jump start your career.

4. Get paid while you find your passion

Not quite sure what you want to do with your life, who you want to be or the kind of company that would be the right fit for you? With temporary assignments, you can test out many different work environments until you find one that best fits you.

5. Get a full-time job

In many cases, a temporary job can lead to full-time employment if a you impress your manager. That’s why it’s important to work hard, follow the rules, meet expectations, and have a positive attitude on every assignment.

Be Your Own Leader

Be Your Own Leader

Be Your Own Leader

This week, like most weeks we sat down with our fearless leader and as usual she gives us a little life’s tale or truth to think about. Life lessons if you will, that translates into work and beyond. This week I thought it was appropriate to share because she wanted to talk about goals – personal and professional including where we see ourselves a year from now. This time of year, is full of goal angst. Mostly we’re going into the holidays with the hope to change things we don’t like about ourselves. Maybe we want to not gain the holiday weight or perhaps change a bad habit but that’s not what this goal focus should be about. Our leader was asking us to be our own leader by looking at our current situation, then giving voice to what may be holding us back and then purposely breathing life into it as we set our sights on that goal.

Ramona wanted us to think about giving voice to our desires, putting a bull’s-eye on our vision while using the metaphor of a bow and arrow to get us there. Let me explain a bit further; you see as you hold a bow and arrow in your arms, when you’re pulling back and you feel that tension, that is your current circumstances. When you take a deeper look, you might realize that the circumstances are of your own making. You can do something about it, you can in fact be your own leader. Where you aim the bow, that is your target, the bull’s-eye holds your vision of where or who you want to be. When you have that tension of your current circumstance pulled back, you will need to let go and send it on its path. You are giving that vision a voice. It’s what you want, your heart’s desire if you will.

You see, at All Star Labor & Staffing we are big believers in that the past is not going to pre-dictate your future and you must make goals from the right place, not from a dark place, not from shame or doubt. They must come from that light within. What will make you happy? What will make you proud? We were tasked to think about a year from now sitting around the same table what kind of person do we want to be, where do we want our life to be, what do we want to master in our work and our personal life?

So, friends I am tasking you as well. Be the leader in your life. What is your heart desire? What do you want to do or to be, what do you want to master in the next year? Take aim with your bow, pointing directly at your goal. Feel the tension of your current circumstances. What is really holding you back? And then give voice to it! Say it out loud! Give it voice and let it fly!
And then – let us know how it goes. We can’t wait to find out.
