Your Authentic Self at Work

When you start a new job, do you do your best to fit in and fall in line with the culture of the company? If so, you may start to feel like you are not being yourself, or you simply cannot be yourself so you decide you can’t possibly continue in that workplace and jump to the next.

It costs a company a lot of money to hire and rehire so it is in their best interest to retain their employees – especially the good ones. It takes time, effort and money to constantly hire and train new staff. At All Star Labor & Staffing it is imperative that we not only fit qualified people with each job but fit personality and character as well. It is in all our best interest to foster your individual talents and skills because companies want you to be an asset.

How do you not leave YOU behind when you walk into work? The following are ways you can fit into the culture but also set your own tone and exemplify authenticity in your workplace:

Be your authentic you from the start. Be upfront about the way you work best, express your ideas and put your whole self into your work. Just remember that everyone of your co-workers should be allowed to be their true, whole selves as well. Acceptance and appreciation leads to a happy and healthy work environment. It also makes it a more creative and collaborative one since everyone brings their own special skills to the table.

Ask the tough questions. Ask questions that will lead you to what you need to do to get ahead, fit in, and stand out. Find out how your company values creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Don’t be too fearful to ask about technology usage, performance reviews, the promotion process, or any other facet of your work. Transparency creates communication between employer and employee and that can lead to the autonomy of self-expression.

Let others in. When you let others know the reason behind how you choose to work and share your ideas you give insight into how your authentic self helps you perform better at work. Also giving permission for others to appreciate your true, authentic self.

How do you bring your authentic self into your work?

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Working With Staffing Agencies

There’s no question the staffing and recruitment industry is growing considerably, with millions of Americans employed on any given business day. If you’re an active job seeker or simply looking to expand your career prospects, connect with a staffing coordinator who can speed up and simplify your job search. Here are five reasons to consider working with a staffing agency:

1. Recent grads need real-world work experience. While working with a staffing agency you are gaining valuable real-world experience that you can add to your resume.

2. Companies rely on staffing agencies. As the business community embraces an “on-demand” workforce, more and more employers are turning to staffing firms who use emerging job search technologies alongside their human instincts to deliver the best-fit talent they are looking for.

3. Recruiters can be your career agent. We all know wading through the online world of job listings, LinkedIn and social media can be complicated, time-consuming and frustrating. You don’t have to go it alone. We have posted a couple examples of people who have “found a job every time they walked through the door” here at All Star Labor & Staffing. Both Terry and Ed worked consistently over a decade with us and now have found themselves in a full-time, forever job that they are extremely happy with.

4. Not just for temps! Many people assume staffing agencies only offer temporary positions. Our staffing coordinators are often asked to search for full-time, permanent and temporary-to-hire positions across a wide range of industries. Even workers who begin working as a temporary employee are often hired permanently after proving their value. In fact, we have found that roughly 40 percent of companies we place temps at say many of the top talent in their company began as an All Star temporary worker.

5. It’s free. There aren’t many things you get for free these days, but working with a staffing company is one of them. With the many benefits a job seeker can access through a staffing firm, why wouldn’t you work with one?

All Star Success Story – Terry “Bear” L.

“Every time I walked through the door, I had a job.” That is what Terry “Bear” L. said when I spoke to him yesterday. Terry is a long time All Star employee in Bend, OR. Terry has been working with All Star to successfully find employment since the office was first opened. When Terry first moved to Bend he was referred to All Star and met Scott Reynolds, the Bend Branch Manager. Terry has developed a friendship with everyone in the Bend office over the years. “Always dealing with the guys in the office, you end up with a bunch of friends rather than managers,” said Terry. “I often run into them outside of work and they are just great people.”

Terry has held all kinds of positions with All Star Labor & Staffing over the years. He has worked mostly in the construction industry, some seasonal, some temp jobs and quite a few that turned into full time positions that would last years. Seasonal jobs have included working at Mt. Bachelor, and events at the fairgrounds. Some of his favorite jobs over the years have included demolition, framing and drilling. He has a real talent for working with his hands and has learned some amazing skills from different kinds of temp work over the years. He learned how to build water features, conveyer systems, corrals and out buildings. He loved building fences on the edge of the national forest area and discovered he has a knack for bringing in business for the contractors he has worked for. Over the years he has been given great bonuses and even nicer work trucks for the hard work he has put into every job he does.

The last temp job that Terry was sent to has now turned into a full time job that he has been at for years. He hand crafts wood paddles for a local company. He loves working with his hands to create and sculpt, loves going to work every day and especially loves not having to work outside in extreme weather. The company even worked with All Star to bring on Terry’s stepson for seasonal work. He has been the jack of all trades and learned so much over the years but he now feels like he has found what we like to call – his forever home. The job that turns out to be the right fit in a way that you didn’t even know was possible.

“We could not be happier for Terry,” said Scott Reynolds. “It has been our pleasure to help him find good jobs over the years and we love getting to know people so well that placing them in the right job is easy for us. We will be here if Terry ever needs us again, but I think he has found the right forever job for him. Finding a job is hard when you go it alone. You never know what you are going to get but when you work with All Star we get to place you with clients we know, job descriptions that are very clear and by getting to know our employees we have a much better sense of what works best for everyone. We wish Terry all the best and hope that he won’t be a stranger and that he will stop by and see us every once and awhile.”

All Star Labor & Staffing Employment Agency to Expand into Eugene on May 17

EUGENE, OR – 05/17/2017 — Portland-based All Star Labor & Staffing company expanded its services and opened the doors to its new Eugene location today, with plans to match local residents with available jobs in Lane County. All Star Labor & Staffing is a full-service boutique agency focused on creating successful partnerships with local companies by understanding each client’s unique needs and striving for excellence with every placement. Founder and Director Ramona Mathany spent 15 years in the PEO business providing clients with payroll, HR, workers’ compensation insurance and administrative services before starting All Star Labor & Staffing. She brought this expertise into her staffing business, and is now committed to providing companies with their single most important asset – their people.

All Star Labor & Staffing was established in 2009 in Portland, OR and placed 150 employees in the first year. Now, as the company celebrates its 8th anniversary, it also celebrates 3,200 employees across Oregon including Salem, Albany and Bend and two branches in Portland with the latest being an office in NE Portland on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. In an effort to expand its services and continue to serve Oregon business and support local jobseekers, it will open its 6th location in Lane County. Mathany said the agency has temporary positions and long-term assignments available throughout Lane County.

“We find jobs for individuals including temporary assignments, seasonal positions, and evaluation-to-hire opportunities that could lead to a full-time, permanent placement,” Mathany said. “But it is not as simple as it sounds, as we consistently provide quality service and pay special attention to what makes each business unique. We strive to help employers grow their businesses while helping employees develop their careers. All Star serves as a bridge to finding the right fit for both clients and employees. Our job is to be a part of the journey, lending a hand with a spirit of excellence.” Mathany said.

Oregon has recently reported historically low unemployment rates. This is great news for our economy but can prove challenging for employers. So while Lane County is home to other staffing agencies, Mathany said she’s confident All Star’s personalized approach to recruiting and placement will be a tremendous asset to local businesses facing unprecedented obstacles due to the declining number of individuals seeking employment.

The newest All Star Labor & Staffing branch celebrates being fully operational today, May 17th. The office is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and will be operated by Branch Manager, Kris Gruba who has worked in business management for 20+ years and specializes in personalized placements for large and small businesses.

“As a seasoned business owner, I understand the need for a strong workforce of dedicated employees,” Mathany said. “Fortunately, All Star Labor and Staffing is always recruiting and we can help our clients build their own all-star team.”

All Star Success Story – Armando G.

Armando G. is most certainly an All Star! He came to All Star after Trevor, a Staffing Coordinator at our Salem office met Armando in early November at a non-work related event. After hearing some of Armando’s story, Trevor gave him a business card and invited him to come in and apply for work. Armando came in a couple days later to apply and was immediately sent out on a part-time construction job and totally nailed it, pun intended. Shortly after that, another construction company needed help and Armando was available and sent right out. That client kept Armando working for several months and said he was a great employee, a very hard worker. In total over the course of 5 months, we sent Armando to a total of 4 different clients who needed part-time help and every one of them raved about what a great employee he was. One of the clients said: “ARMANDO KICKS BUTT, SMART, GREAT ATTITUDE”. His fantastic attitude was rewarded in January with an All Star Employee of The Month Award.

When we were able to place him at his now full-time job doing window installation, we could not have been more thrilled for him. His new “home” company is fantastic and incredibly happy to have him. Nothing makes us happier at All Star than watching people succeed. Being able to place someone in a job when they are in need is incredibly rewarding, but when we are able to put them in a full-time “forever” job, it gives us a true sense of happiness and fulfillment.

Armando, thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. We wish you only the very best!

Social Media – What Not to Do If You Want a Job

We all do it, share our lives on social media but you may not be aware that it could cost you a job. These days hiring professionals see you well before they meet you. One in five employers says they have rejected a candidate after seeing something they deem as inappropriate online. So, what are the red flags employers look for in your social media?

According to YouGov.com, three quarters of employers agree that aggressive or offensive language is the most off-putting social media behavior.

So, what can you do to improve your social habits for the sake of your job or future career? The following tips will help:
1. Get Linked In! Make sure your LinkedIn profile is at all star status! The more you add, the better chances you will have. Add professional pictures and links to any portfolios of work you may have. 48% of 2,000 business manages reported LinkedIn as there go-to social media platform to check on potential employees. Facebook came in as a close second at 46%.
2. You are your own brand. You may not realize it, but what you post across social media paints a picture of who you are and what you stand for. Be cognizant of that every time you post.
3. Avoid the provocative. Images speak for themselves and if you have pictures of yourself doing things up in “da club”, you may want to keep those on your private phone or privately secured pages. It’s not great that people judge, but businesses need to thoroughly vet candidates so they are confident they are making a good investment for their company.
4. Slow your roll with the Selfies! Selfies are great but there is a line that many cross when posting too many and they end up looking very self-involved. Remember, you are your own brand and is being self-involved the message you want to portray about yourself? If you love the selfie, no worries, just stick to Snapchatting your friends with them!
5. Don’t badmouth. Social media can turn into a very hostile place. Just remember to keep your anger in check and most importantly – don’t badmouth your current or previous employer. This creates a negative image of you and your future employer will assume that you will do the same thing to them.

If you are currently seeking employment, it might greatly benefit you to reach out and connect with a recruiter at the All Star Labor & Staffing branch near you to see how we can help.
