All Star Success Story – Terry “Bear” L.

“Every time I walked through the door, I had a job.” That is what Terry “Bear” L. said when I spoke to him yesterday. Terry is a long time All Star employee in Bend, OR. Terry has been working with All Star to successfully find employment since the office was first opened. When Terry first moved to Bend he was referred to All Star and met Scott Reynolds, the Bend Branch Manager. Terry has developed a friendship with everyone in the Bend office over the years. “Always dealing with the guys in the office, you end up with a bunch of friends rather than managers,” said Terry. “I often run into them outside of work and they are just great people.”

Terry has held all kinds of positions with All Star Labor & Staffing over the years. He has worked mostly in the construction industry, some seasonal, some temp jobs and quite a few that turned into full time positions that would last years. Seasonal jobs have included working at Mt. Bachelor, and events at the fairgrounds. Some of his favorite jobs over the years have included demolition, framing and drilling. He has a real talent for working with his hands and has learned some amazing skills from different kinds of temp work over the years. He learned how to build water features, conveyer systems, corrals and out buildings. He loved building fences on the edge of the national forest area and discovered he has a knack for bringing in business for the contractors he has worked for. Over the years he has been given great bonuses and even nicer work trucks for the hard work he has put into every job he does.

The last temp job that Terry was sent to has now turned into a full time job that he has been at for years. He hand crafts wood paddles for a local company. He loves working with his hands to create and sculpt, loves going to work every day and especially loves not having to work outside in extreme weather. The company even worked with All Star to bring on Terry’s stepson for seasonal work. He has been the jack of all trades and learned so much over the years but he now feels like he has found what we like to call – his forever home. The job that turns out to be the right fit in a way that you didn’t even know was possible.

“We could not be happier for Terry,” said Scott Reynolds. “It has been our pleasure to help him find good jobs over the years and we love getting to know people so well that placing them in the right job is easy for us. We will be here if Terry ever needs us again, but I think he has found the right forever job for him. Finding a job is hard when you go it alone. You never know what you are going to get but when you work with All Star we get to place you with clients we know, job descriptions that are very clear and by getting to know our employees we have a much better sense of what works best for everyone. We wish Terry all the best and hope that he won’t be a stranger and that he will stop by and see us every once and awhile.”

7 Habits of A Powerful Leader

7 Habits of A Powerful Leader
By Ramona Mathany
Owner, American Admin, Inc. & All Star Labor and Staffing

In times of uncertainty, we look to our leaders to guide us. In order to be a true and powerful leader you must stick to your principles. If you heard someone described as a powerful leader, you might assume he or she would be the loudest person in the room, the one telling everyone else what to do. But powerful does not mean dominating. In fact, a controlling, dominating person is the very opposite of a powerful leader. So what exactly makes a powerful leader and how do you become one? Here are the 7 essential habits of a powerful leader:

1. Do not control others
Powerful leaders do not try to control, convince, or manipulate other people or their behaviors. They know it doesn’t work, and it’s not their job. Their job is to control themselves.

2. Create a respectful environment
Powerful leaders are able to consciously and deliberately create the environment by showing respect. They deliberately set the standard for how they expect to be treated by the way they treat others. As they consistently act in responsible, respectful, and loving ways, it becomes clear that only people who can get close to them are those who know how to show respect, be responsible, and love well.

3. Refuse to be a victim
Life does not happen to powerful leaders, powerful leaders make choices and decision to navigate proactively. They are not controlled or infected by their environment. Powerful leaders refuse the play the victim by shifting responsibility for their choices onto others.

4. Require others around you to be powerful
When powerful leaders encounter a powerless person, they are not tempted to dive into any unhealthy emotional ties or attachments. They hear a victim’s sob story and ask, “so what are you going to do about that? What have you tried? What else could you try?” These questions confront powerless people with their responsibility and their capacity to make choices and control themselves. This is the only option a powerful leader will offer to powerless people: become powerful, make choices, and control yourself.

5. Make daily decisions that align with your vision
Powerful leaders do not simply react to whatever is happening today. They are able to take responsibility for their decisions and the consequences of those decisions – even for mistakes and failures. They can respond to today and create tomorrow. Powerful leaders have a vision and mission for their life, and can use the events of each day, whether positive or negative, to direct themselves toward that vision.

6. Let your “yes” be “yes” and “no” be “no”
Popular opinion or the pressure of others does not sway the language of powerful leaders. They know exactly what they want and how to communicate their desires. A powerful leader says, “I will. I do. I am.” Powerful leaders can say both “yes” and “no,” and mean it. Others can try to manipulate, charm and threaten, but their answer will stand.

7. Consistently demonstrate who you say you are
Powerful leaders can be who they say they are on a consistent basis. And because they know how to be themselves, they invite those around them to be themselves. Only powerful leaders can create a safe place to know and be known intimately. They say, “I can be me around you and you can be you around me. We do not need to control each other, and we don’t want to control each other. “

We all have room to grow in becoming powerful leaders. No matter what, know that every step on the journey to getting free and being a powerful leader in your own life is worth it. Choosing to say “yes!” to a life of responsibility will be one filled with adventure and joy. Do not let powerlessness and a victim mentality steal from you any longer. YOU can be powerful leader who can make powerful decisions implementing these 7 traits.

All Star Labor & Staffing Employment Agency to Expand into Eugene on May 17

EUGENE, OR – 05/17/2017 — Portland-based All Star Labor & Staffing company expanded its services and opened the doors to its new Eugene location today, with plans to match local residents with available jobs in Lane County. All Star Labor & Staffing is a full-service boutique agency focused on creating successful partnerships with local companies by understanding each client’s unique needs and striving for excellence with every placement. Founder and Director Ramona Mathany spent 15 years in the PEO business providing clients with payroll, HR, workers’ compensation insurance and administrative services before starting All Star Labor & Staffing. She brought this expertise into her staffing business, and is now committed to providing companies with their single most important asset – their people.

All Star Labor & Staffing was established in 2009 in Portland, OR and placed 150 employees in the first year. Now, as the company celebrates its 8th anniversary, it also celebrates 3,200 employees across Oregon including Salem, Albany and Bend and two branches in Portland with the latest being an office in NE Portland on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. In an effort to expand its services and continue to serve Oregon business and support local jobseekers, it will open its 6th location in Lane County. Mathany said the agency has temporary positions and long-term assignments available throughout Lane County.

“We find jobs for individuals including temporary assignments, seasonal positions, and evaluation-to-hire opportunities that could lead to a full-time, permanent placement,” Mathany said. “But it is not as simple as it sounds, as we consistently provide quality service and pay special attention to what makes each business unique. We strive to help employers grow their businesses while helping employees develop their careers. All Star serves as a bridge to finding the right fit for both clients and employees. Our job is to be a part of the journey, lending a hand with a spirit of excellence.” Mathany said.

Oregon has recently reported historically low unemployment rates. This is great news for our economy but can prove challenging for employers. So while Lane County is home to other staffing agencies, Mathany said she’s confident All Star’s personalized approach to recruiting and placement will be a tremendous asset to local businesses facing unprecedented obstacles due to the declining number of individuals seeking employment.

The newest All Star Labor & Staffing branch celebrates being fully operational today, May 17th. The office is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and will be operated by Branch Manager, Kris Gruba who has worked in business management for 20+ years and specializes in personalized placements for large and small businesses.

“As a seasoned business owner, I understand the need for a strong workforce of dedicated employees,” Mathany said. “Fortunately, All Star Labor and Staffing is always recruiting and we can help our clients build their own all-star team.”

All Star Success Story – Omar

Omar came to All Star Labor & Staffing – Portland in hopes of finding a more professional environment. He was working as a freight stocker at a big box appliance store and while it was a great job, he was looking to move up in the professional world. When he came to All Star he was instantly liked by supervisor Adam Stephens. “We knew Omar would be a great fit after just one meeting. We originally hired him to be an Staffing Coordinator here at All Star but he is such a great people person that he ended up doing a lot of administrative duties for the front desk, interacting with people on a regular basis,” said Stephens.

Before Adam had hired him internally, he was sent on one interview for an Administrative Assistant position at a large construction company. He was originally the runner up and did not get the position but when the person hired did not work out, Adam received a phone call right away because the hiring manager had regretted not hiring Omar to begin with.

While everyone at All Star was sad to see him go, we knew that Omar had dreams that surpassed our office. He is now working at the construction company as an Administrative Assistant and attending school at PCC working towards his associates degree in business management and IT.

“I want to thank All Star for all of the support I felt from the moment I walked through their door. I was presented with such great opportunities,” said Omar.

We know that Omar will go on to have a very bright future, we thank him for letting us be a part of his journey and we wish him well!

Be The First Rate Version of Yourself

“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else”. This quote by the amazing Judy Garland resonates on a personal and professional level with everyone. For Judy Garland this meant that no matter the ups and downs in her life, at least she was her authentic self. This quote has been used time and time again for good reason as nothing good can come from pretending to be something that you’re not. “Be yourself.” It’s a vague adage, so what does it really mean, to be yourself? And is it really as easy as it sounds? With the steps below, it can be.

Don’t get stuck in the past.
Let yourself grow without reminding yourself of past mistakes. You are not a victim of your circumstances, you don’t need to cling to past mistakes. You should absolutely own them, but then allow yourself to forgive and move forward.

Find how you define yourself on your own terms.
Oscar Wilde once said: Be yourself; everyone else is already taken. It’s a humorous quote but speaks of the truth. You can’t be yourself if you don’t know, understand, and accept yourself first. Take the time to see yourself for who you are, not what everyone expects you to be. This is not easy and you may be self-conscious but when you surround yourself with people who are of like minds and who are also true to themselves, you will be accepted for who you are.

Find your talents and your career path.
When it comes to finding your career path there are ways to find out what you are naturally drawn to. Everyone was born with talent, you just need to explore them. There are many personality tests that will help you see what sort of work you may be suited for. Just remember to take this with a grain of salt – no test can define you. Only you can do that.

Don’t put yourself in a box.
You are not just one thing with defined edges. You can be brought up with certain values that will make an undeniable impression on you such as your religion, culture, mentors, education and friends. As you figure out who your authentic self is, you can weigh these values and decide what belongs to you, what you want to own as your truth and what you feel in conflict with. It is okay to feel conflicted, it is all a part of you. You have wonderful dynamic edges that can contain all different aspects of your beliefs and feelings. Just value what feels the most true to you and just keep doing the next right thing for you.

You are stronger than you know.
If you are not focusing on who you are and you are constantly comparing yourself to someone else, than you likely are holding on to resentment. If you want to be like someone else, then you will constantly disappoint yourself and hold unhealthy resentment that will only lead you to self-destruction. Start looking within for your strengths and good character. If you can accept yourself, than you can start to learn and grow into the person you were meant to be. You are meant to be YOU, the first rate version!

Top 5 Benefits of Working for a Temp Agency

What about temp work? If you don’t think it is an option, think again.

So you want a full-time opportunity, but you’ve been searching for a while – with no luck? Have you also considered temporary employment? As a leading temporary employment agency All Star Labor & Staffing is a full service employment agency offering temporary, contract to hire, and direct hire positions. We connect top companies with screened candidates in fields such as accounting, clerical, construction, distribution, human resources, information technology, labor, logistics and transportation, management, marketing, medical, warehouse, and beyond.

If you haven’t considered checking out what your local temp agency can offer, you may be missing out on something wonderful.

Here’s the top 5 benefits that temporary work can offer you:

1. Get your foot in the door
A couple of things may be getting in the way of your dream full-time job. 1. You might be interested in working for a company that isn’t advertising full-time positions. 2. You want to break into a field, but don’t have a lot of experience. Either way, temp assignments would be a fantastic way to achieve both these goals. Not only are companies more likely to hire candidates without a lot of experience on a temporary basis, but you can also get your foot in the door at your dream company.

2. Flexible schedule
When you work as a temporary employee, you can have more say in what your schedule will be. While you can absolutely work full-time, you can also work just a few days a week or a few hours, every day. You simply need to have clear communication regarding your scheduling needs when working with your staffing coordinator.

3. Free training
There are so many job possibilities out there but some extra training might be needed. When you partner with a trustworthy staffing agency for your temporary assignments, you can easily access new resources, including free training. As a result, you can develop new skills and improve existing ones, helping you get into a new field that can jump start your career.

4. Get paid while you find your passion

Not quite sure what you want to do with your life, who you want to be or the kind of company that would be the right fit for you? With temporary assignments, you can test out many different work environments until you find one that best fits you.

5. Get a full-time job

In many cases, a temporary job can lead to full-time employment if a you impress your manager. That’s why it’s important to work hard, follow the rules, meet expectations, and have a positive attitude on every assignment.

All Star Profile – Kevin S.

Here at All Star Labor & Staffing we have the immense privilege of being a part of peoples journey. People who sometimes need a hand, not a hand-up – there is a difference. Our employees are our partners, we wouldn’t be here without their hard work and that makes us their biggest fans. Cheering on our fellow staff members and employees is a gift and today we want to honor one of them – Kevin S., employed in Salem, OR.

Kevin S. has a long work history in construction, at one point before the recession he was working successfully as a licensed contractor. He was living and working in the Lebanon – Sweet Home area doing his best to find long term work but eventually lost his job and in time lost his transportation as well. He decided to move to Salem to live with his mother while he got back on his feet. Kevin’s job search stared at unemployment and led him to the Goodwill Job Connection where he was referred to All Star.

“Kevin came to our office on February 16th, 2017,” said Karen Cain, Salem Branch Manager. “During the interview he showed our Staffing Coordinator, Matt pictures of the cabinets he had recently built, it was clear that Kevin had some very valuable skills. Matt immediately set-up an interview for him with ServiceMaster. He interviewed the following week and was immediately assigned to full-time work as a carpenter earning a great hourly wage. Kevin has been unemployed for some time and we are overjoyed that we were able to get him back to work the field he loves, at a fantastic company.”

“The All Star office really helped me and I will always be thankful for how much support I was given,” Kevin remarked. “It’s never easy to find a good fit with a company. Usually you can find a place that may be a good job but it is unusual to find a place that has a job that fits you AND the people you are working for have good attitudes, are upbeat and supportive to their employees. I also love that my place of employment has so many opportunities, I seem to be doing different aspects of construction every day and I love it! They have even told me that they will set up a meeting to talk about full time work once my agency hours are fulfilled. I could not be happier.”

Thank you Kevin, and keep up the amazing work!
